Reception for the Artist: Friday 12, January 7 – 9PM
Jan Baum Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition of the work of Kathryn Jacobi. A widely respected artist of enormous skill in an old master technique, Kathryn’s exhibition is one of exquisitely made paintings of still life and figures.
She says: “My paintings for this show represent the full gamut of my current work---from carefully rendered portraits of people and artifacts of the natural world, to landscapes from memory, to the entirely imagined painting of a circus of sorts.
I find that the act of looking at and depicting a basket of bread demands the same sort of riveted attention as does a portrait from life, My hero in this pursuit is the Spanish master, Zurburan, whose plates of lemons, or studies of monks, possess a classic clarity of light that becomes a luminous world in itself. My landscapes imagined from memory form a bridge between the observed world and the waking dream.
In all this work my aim is to feel deeply, see clearly, tell the truth and to present my personal vision as one that will provide the meditative or contemplative possibilities of both the quotidian we live in and the extraordinary play of our human imagination.”
