Reception for the Artist, Thursday 9, 7PM – 9PM
Jan Baum Gallery is pleased to present the sculpture of Mavis McClure. She is among a group of the finest ceramic figurative artists to emerge in the last decade. Self taught and just 32, McClure’s larger-than-life size figures are dominated by exaggerated hands and feet, reminiscent, but not imitative of, both Cycladic sculpture and Picasso’s versions thereof.
McClure builds her pieces with walls much thinner than other ceramic figurative artists (Frey, Arneson) and so is constantly facing new technical challenges as her work becomes more expansive in both dimension and character. Combining a strength of form and primal beauty, McClure’s evocative figures succeed on many levels.
McClure says of her work:“I am concerned with what can be communicated through gesture, the tilt of a head or turn of a hand. The texture and color of my glazes, applied in expressive strokes, retain a rough organic surface with a subtle earthen palette. Large as they are, the sculptures seem faced with something either literally or figuratively larger than themselves. Most gaze upward in bafflement, suspicion and wonder.”
