Susan Wickstrand

Allegory Of Atmosphere

4 May through 28 June 2002

Artist reception: 4 May 3-5 PM

Jan Baum Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Southland painter Susan Wickstrand. In the current work, Susan is totally absorbed by the subtleties of the atmospheric landscape - a glowing or misty light, an otherworldly mood inspire the paintings. She says "Capturing these transitory moments of nature is my link to the ethereal." "The encaustic medium (the process of combining molten wax with oil paint) provided the perfect means for my pursuit of the luminous atmosphere I was seeking. Some of the results are spontaneous, unpredictable sometimes hazardous to the original ceation and ultimately beautiful: just like the elements of nature. Added inspiration comes from my favorite poet, Rainer Maria Rilke: 'I would like to step out of my heart, and go walking beneath the enormous sky…on a silent cliff-edge…even here, something can bloom.' I hope the viewer enjoys daydreaming into these works as much as I have enjoyed the process of creating them."
