Jan Baum Gallery is very pleased to present the sculptural paintings of Sylvia Glass. Sylvia Glass’ ideas have always been stimulated by the discarded, the rejected, the used, almost a metaphor for the discontent of society. Her work, always part of the assemblage esthetic, is now unified by the use of scrap metal. The artist says: My thoughts for this show were to create sculptural paintings, to build forms on a surface that would reach out to the viewer. In my travels, I came upon a scrap metal yard and the owner encouraged me to take whatever I needed. My work evolved as I combined the metal pieces and paint. The structure and especially the mass and weight of the metal as I held the scraps in my hands, was significant. In some, you will find drawings that work into the content.
