Roberto Gil de Montes
13 May through 30 June 2005
Reception: Friday 13 May 7-9 pm
Jan Baum Gallery proudly presents the new paintings of Roberto Gil de Montes. These works on canvas and paper are at once simple and mysterious, and in the tradition of the artist, always thoughtful and introspective. Although the artist feels that there is no dominant theme to this work, the pieces read somewhat like a series of therapeutic (deeply insightful) self-portraits. Faces obscured by many different masks and torsos cut at mid thigh or knee, lead to spiritual and sexual ambiguity. The element of the mask may indeed be seen to obstruct the self or perhaps to protect it from the judgments of an outside world. There is a direct correlation between the delicacy of the handmade paper pieces with gouache and the fragility of ones self-image and emotions; the delicate balance between perception and reality, both inside and out. There is the cubist, influence that mirrors the complexity of these personalities and perceptions; always shifting and changing. Whether subtly or completely disguised, these partial bodies with stiff, protected stance reveal their vulnerability with delicate drips and sensitive, signs.
