Roberto Gil de Montes
New Paintings and Works on Paper
4 March through 22 April 2000
Artist Reception: Saturday 4 March, 3-5 PM
Jan Baum Gallery is pleased to present new romantic, sensuous paintings and works on paper by Roberto Gil De Montes.
These new works have been largely inspired by his travels in India, miniature paintings as well as the landscape of Nayarit, (West Mexico). The influence of Nayarit has been continuous for several years. In this exhibition we again see the tropical, idyllic nocturnal landscape which evokes the experience of spritual reflection and a perspective as seen almost from the planets.
The new works on handmade paper (from Nepal) and gouache, are concerned with the idea of primordial creation, using such symbols as the egg, the lingam and the womb. These are images of creation, darkness and light; Buddha and his teaching, was another most impressive experience of India. “An island is Buddha, the landscape surrounds it, the stars move, clouds hang in the air…time stands still in the present.”
The images, though interested in the Hindu notion of creation, do not suggest a revered belief, but a search to understand it.
