Jan Baum Gallery proudly announces the 5th solo exhibition of well-known southern California sculptor, Annette Bird. The artist says: My sculptures are a response to the world in which I live; as such it can be the cultural or political milieu in which we exist, but more often it has to do with the dynamics I perceive in the human drama of everyday life. There is always a psychological element. My work has been figurative and narrative for about 20 years, and usually consists of 2 or more figures in silent conversation. In my new work, however, there are some single figures, but the presence of miniature people or birds adds to the expressive intent of the sculptures. The sources of imagery and the settings vary from series to series, but my sculptures always try to challenge the viewer to penetrate the different layers of meaning, both conscious and unconscious, that these works present. In my new series, “Alternate Realities”, as in earlier work, metaphor and fantasy are my vehicles of expression. A young girl lies dreaming, her arms branching out to welcome bird messengers who bring her tales of unbounded worlds where duty doesn’t obligate and doors remain open.
