Jan Baum gallery proudly presents the figurative, classic paintings of Caroline Maxwell. Mount Vesuvius, Roman fertility cults, archery, and the somewhat obscure Belgian conceptual artist Marcel Broodthaers, are among the cast members in Caroline Maxwell's latest project titled "The Villa of the Mysteries: Department of Eagles." As an exercise in meta-mythological narrative, Maxwell skillfully weaves these elements into a series of delicate paintings and drawings. Slyly humorous one minute and dead serious the next, Maxwell's work unfolds as a series of visual stanzas that speak a language derived from her studies in vulcanology, geology, mythology, and esoterica. Caroline Maxwell studied painting in Italy, and has participated in a number of artist residencies in Italy and South Africa. She holds a Master's degree in Art History and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from Claremont Graduate University. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
